Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver diamine fluoride, sometimes referred to as SDF, or silver fluoride, is a topical treatment put on teeth to slow down or stop dental decay in both primary and permanent teeth. Its key ingredient is silver, which kills the germs that can cause tooth decay. SDF is often used as a conservative alternative to traditional fillings because of it’s non-invasive application. SDF can be used to halt the decay progression until the decayed area of the tooth can be removed and a definitive restoration can be placed.

Silver diamine fluoride is particularly useful for managing tooth decay in children and in patients with developmental disabilities, behavioral issues, or who are fearful of needles or dental procedures. SDF can also be applied to teeth that cannot be restored in an attempt to stop the decay from progressing and to try and maintain the non-restorable tooth for as long as possible. It can be used in this instance as an effective interim therapy used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan supervised by Dr. Blomquist.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods, tap water, toothpastes, and mouthwashes, and is a key component in developing strong teeth and preventing tooth decay. Over time, the enamel layer of your teeth can begin to deteriorate due to bacteria producing acids, in a process called demineralization. Fluoride helps remineralize, or add new minerals, to the teeth to maintain strong enamel and prevent decay.

Fluoride treatments are applied by dental professionals in an effort to protect a tooth from decay. The most common application of fluoride is in a solution or varnish that is applied with a brush to your teeth after your hygiene visit. This application can provide cavity protection for several months.

Another fluoride application is through prescription fluoride toothpastes. These toothpastes are sold at our office or are available with a prescription through your pharmacy. This toothpaste delivers up to four times the fluoride of the over-the-counter toothpastes and rinses and provides a high level of cavity protection. Prescription toothpaste can also help remineralize small cavities when used consistently over time and according to your dentist’s directions.
